Are you excited for spring as much as we are? We figured many families will be doing a lot of spring cleaning around the home, and we wanted to help you become aware of a unique and very helpful cleaning and organization method that has been going around for a while.
You may or may not have heard about the KonMari method prior to seeing this post, so we will explain it to you in the simplest way possible while retaining the vital points of the method. But before we go any further, let us introduce you to the woman who made this happen.
About Marie Kondo
Marie Kondo is an organizing expert from Tokyo, who founded her very own tidying consultant business at the early age of 19. She has published several books on this life-changing habit of not only organizing your home, but also tidying up your life. In addition to this, she also held a spot on Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2015.
Utilizing the KonMari Method
1. Have a checklist before starting
Having a checklist saves you a lot of time and energy and can make you feel more inspired. You really cannot get much done if you do not have a checklist. The KonMari method suggests organizing in the order of clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and sentimental items.
2. Ask yourself how you want your home to make you feel
Do you want to feel modern? Minimalist? Or perhaps you are going for a sophisticated look. It is vital to figure this out before you start your cleaning and organization. This way, you will have a visual in mind so you know what to keep and what to store away or donate. You can also look up pictures of homes for inspiration!
3. Tidy in one or two days
If you space out your cleaning schedule too much, you will not remember what all you decided to keep from previous days. The categories that you already cleaned and organized may become messy by now as well, so you will have to revisit them. For these reasons, we suggest tidying up your entire home in just one or two days. You can organize your clothes, books, and papers on one day, and your miscellaneous and sentimental items on the second day. Be sure to cancel all your plans on your cleaning days and put away your phone and laptop to avoid distractions. It might be a good idea to order takeout as well.
4. Organize by category
To stay as organized as possible, the KonMari method advises people to organize by category rather than area. For example, instead of cleaning your entire bedroom closet, which may also contain random trinkets, you should start with just the clothes in your closet, and gather your other clothes that may be under your bed or in a pile on the ground. Once you have organized all of your clothes, you then want to move onto the next category, which is books!
5. Display the items that bring you joy
It is time to ask yourself another question. As you clean, ask yourself exactly why you want to keep the items that you wish to keep. Does it bring you joy or are you keeping it because you have had it for such a long time that you cannot imagine giving it up? If it is the latter, we suggest either donating or storing it away. It would be best for you to keep the items that bring you real joy so you can display them and also keep your most-used items.
If you have too many items that bring you joy, and not enough space in your home, you can also look into a storage unit. This way, you will be able to switch out your items whenever you want, and be able to hold onto your precious belongings! You can also store away any extra items that you know you will need later, such as seasonal belongings.
Did you know that the KonMari method can help you live to 100? That is just one more reason to apply this method. The other good thing about KonMari’s organization advice is that you can apply it to other aspects of your life as well. For example, you can ask yourself how you want a friend to make you feel. From there, you can separate which of your friends bring you true joy, and which ones do nothing but pressure you and bring you down. You can take charge of your entire life with this simple method!
