While people love to travel and move from place to place, most of us hate packing. Packing can be time-consuming and difficult, and packing and organizing for a West Palm Beach storage unit can be even more difficult. Between choosing what to store and how to maximize your space, here are a few simple tips for how to pack and organize for a storage unit.
1. Use One Box Size
If you can, use one box size for all of your items. Same-size boxes stack easily so that you can maximize your self-storage space. Large boxes are great for belongings that aren’t heavy, but may not hold up well at the bottom of large stacks. Large boxes at the bottom are also more difficult to remove. Instead, try using only medium or small-sized boxes so that you’re not putting too much weight or volume in one area.
2. Prioritize Items
Identify which items you may need to access while they’re in storage. Things you don’t use regularly, but which may be needed later on should be more accessible than things you don’t think you will need in the near future. Items that you may need to come back for later on are:
- Winter/Summer clothing
- Trip supplies
- Holiday or seasonal items
- Tools
- Office documents
3. Remember to Label
Label each box that you pack on the top and at least on one side with a unique box number, the room it came from, and the contents. You can also mark boxes that you think you might need to access in the future. Those items should be put in your unit last so that you can get them first when you come back. Remember to be as detailed as possible with your label, so you don’t have to rummage through everything looking for just one item in the future.
4. Create a Master List
Now that you have written down the contents of each box, it’s time to take that to a list. Write down the box number and its contents on a master list. This may seem like a redundant step now, but you’ll thank yourself for it when you need to find something.
5. Shelve or stack boxes
If your unit is a long term storage solution, you should place sturdy shelves along at least one wall of the unit. You can also stack your boxes this way:
Stack from back to front in order or priority. The boxes you access frequently should be packed last and be near the door or on shelves.
Put large, heavy boxes down first so that you can stack lighter ones on top. Don’t stack too high because eventually the boxes can lean and fall.
Choose the brick-wall stacking pattern. This method will help you easily find and replace boxes without having to unstack already stacked boxes. All you’ll have to do is take the box out and replace it when you’re done. That’s it. There’s no moving any other box except the one that you need.
